Smart – Use passenger footsteps to generate power

East Japan Railways are currently evaluating the possibility to use a human footsteps power generators in Tokyo station and around Shibuya station. With human foot traffic as the most easily available energy, this new power source has been installed in the flooring in what’s commonly believed to be the busiest subway stations in the world.

Smart – bird tweet in the subway

At some subway stations in Tokyo you can hear the twitter of birds. No, it’s not an extremely delicate climate for birds, it’s small speakers around the stairs placed to help visually impaired to find their way through the station. Not disturbing for anyone, actually very cosy and enjoyable.
